5 Things We Need To Remember When Life Sucks

Life is tough. No matter who you are, where you come from, or where you’re going things are going to happen in life that seem to be bigger than you can handle. Many of us, myself included, look at these trials and tribulations with a “Why Me?” Here are 5 things we need to remember when life sucks.

There Are Always Going to Be Hardships

It sounds incredibly pessimistic but no one is getting through life unscathed. Whether it’s the loss of a loved one, unemployment, illness, accident, stress, depression, or whatever it may be everybody goes through hard stuff. We can let that get the best of us though. If you spend too much time dwelling on the bad things in life you miss out on the good things going on around you. I don’t care if it’s treating yourself to your favorite food or jamming out in your car on the way home after a long day at work. Why wallow in our bad moods and negative attitudes when we can choose a different approach?

Yes, our attitude is a choice. We can allow ourselves to be overwhelmed by all the crap or we can choose positivity. We can take notes from Captain Jack Sparrow on this concept:

“The problem is not the problem. The problem is your attitude about the problem.” Jack Sparrow

The Tough Stuff Makes Us Stronger

Whenever we experience hardship we have the opportunity to learn and grow from it. All that tough crap we go through can help us weather tougher stuff in the future. I know people that seem to be completely unflappable when life throws them a curve ball.  They just pick up themselves up and move on with their lives. Talking to them more I’ve found out they’ve been through a lot in the past, and what’s going on right now isn’t so bad in comparison. Or, having survived past chaos, they know their current problem is something they can handle. If we take the time to look at these situations as opportunities to grow we can get a lot more from them.

Whenever you go through hard stuff you can either let it wound you or use it to make yourself stronger.

Don’t Make Things Worse For Everyone Else

The other day I was going through the drive-thru and apparently the guy in front of me received the wrong order. I knew this because he was yelling at the top of his lungs at the teenage girl in the window about it. My keen intuitive mind sensed all that rage wasn’t about the wrong order, at least not entirely.

If your having a bad day and you take it out on someone else all your doing is perpetuating a cycle of crap. The man yells at the girl, then the girl is rude to me, then I snap at a co-worker, and so on. There is no benefit in infecting other people with your crap.

Even when you’re going through hard times try to not become an emotional burden for everyone else. I am incredibly guilty of this. My co-worker once commented that when I was angry everyone knew it and I was “like a thunderstorm of rage”. This is not something I wanted and although it took some time I’ve learned not to project all over other people.

The girl was fine by the way. I complimented her nail polish and told her everyone makes mistakes. She smiled and told me she tries not to let jerks ruin her good mood.

Be the Peace in the Storm

Have you ever been stuck in an absolutely epic thunderstorm? Your car is being pushed by violent winds, rain and hail pelting the windows, and thunder and lighting crack the sky and rumble deep in your chest. It’s really scary and there is nothing you can do about it. The stuff we go through in life can be the same.

We have no control, we can do nothing to fix it, and we are powerless. You can’t always fix the situations that you encounter, all you can do is remain calm and try to be as peaceful as possible. The storm will pass.

We All Cope Differently

When the crap in our lives starts to pile up we are all going to deal with it differently. I went to the emergency room for abdominal pain and they asked me what my pain level was on a 1-10 scale. I responded with:

“Well, if I don’t move, or talk, or breathe it’s a 7. But if I do any of those things it’s a 10, so could we hurry this up a bit?”

I ended up waiting for another five hours before I went into surgery to have my appendix removed. I guess they didn’t think I was doing too bad if I could make jokes. Unfortunately, that’s one of the ways I cope. It makes me feel better to make a joke and get a laugh out of someone. Other people I know just cry for 10-15 minutes and then they’re fine. We are all different and different things will help get us out of our funk. Find yours, embrace it, and face our problems head on.

We are always going to face difficulties in our lives. Hopefully, by keeping these five things in mind, we can put on helmets and trudge into the fray with a smile on our faces and be the calm in the midst of the storm.
